The first batch of engines built by the Vulcan Foundry differed from the first Crewe built batch in that the pipes to the top feed were not recessed into the boiler lagging and there was no step plate under the smokebox door. Both features were later modified to conform with the Crewe built engines.

Four engines (posibly five), were named after Scottish Army Regiments.

The first loco withdrawn was 45401 in November 1961 from ?? shed after it was in a collision at Warrington with Jubilee Class loco 45630 Swaziland, which was also withdrawn.
The last 46 locos were withdrawn in August 1968 at the end of steam on British Railways: 44690, 44709/713/735/781, 44806/809/871/874/877/888/894/897, 44932/950/971, 45017/025/055/073/095/096, 45110/134/156, 45206/212/231/260/262/268/269/287, 45305/310/318/330/342/350/386/388/390/397, 45407/444/447.
