Total Number Built 70 - Total to BR 70

Introduced 1931. Development of 5100 Class with increased boiler pressure and tractive effort for use in London suburban area. Classification 4MT.

Number Series 6100-6169.

Built by at Great Western Railway Swindon Works.

The majority of the class were employed on local suburban services in and out of Paddington station and were mainly allocated to Old Oak Common, Oxford, Reading, Slough and Southalll sheds. After the suburban services were dieselised, they could be found across the whole of the Western Region of British Railways.

The first locomotive to be withdrawn was the doyen of the class 6100 itself in September 1958 from Reading shed. The class survived until December 1965 when the last twelve locos were withdrawn: 6106, 6111, 6126, 6134-36, 6145, 6156 from Oxford shed; 6141, 6160 from Gloucester shed; 6147, 6165 from Worcester shed.

One loco, No. 6106 is preserved.
