Built 1909-14. Designed by Dunbar.

Total Number Built 8 Total to BR 8.

Introduced December 1909. Dunbar design for Brecon & Merthyr, built by Robert Stephenson Co.

(a) 421-423 and 426 were reboilered by Great Western Railway with taper boiler superheated in 1924, 1929, 1924 and 1941.

424-425 and 428 were rebuilt with Rhymney Railway parallel boiler in 1941, 1936 and 1947.

427 retained its B&MR parallel boiler.

Number Series allocated 421-428 (B&MR Nos. 36-43).

The locos were renumbered by BR from 11, 21, 332, 504, 698, 888, 1084, 1113, although 11, 332, 504 and 1084 never carried their new numbers.

Built at Robert Stephenson's & Co. Ltd. Works - Works Numbers 3379-3382, 3577-3580.

421-424 Lot No. E59 1909.
425-428 Lot No. E91 1914.

The first loco withdrawn was made by the GWR with 427 (1084) in November 1947 from Newport Pill shed.
The first BR withdrawal was 424 (504) in January 1948 also from Newport Pill shed.
Other withdrawals by BR were 421 (11) in January 1949 from Newport Pill shed, 423 (332) in December 1949 from Severn Tunnel shed, 426 (888) in March 1950 from Llantrisant shed, 422 (21) in June 1950 from Severn Tunnel shed and 428 (1113) in August 1950 from Port Talbot Duffryn Yard shed.
The last loco withdrawn was 425 (698) in January 1951 from Cardiff Canton shed.
None are preserved.
