Built 1943-45. Designed by Robert Riddles.

Total Number Built 75 - Total to BR 75.

Introduced 1943. Riddles Ministry of Supply design, purchased by LNER in 1946.

War Department type of 0-6-0 Saddle Tank, several hundreds of which were built between 1943 and 1945. 75 were purchased by the LNER in 1948 and numbered 8006-8080.

Many of the class later acquired the hopper-type bunker.

Withdrawals commenced in 1960, the last two, Nos. 68006 and 68012 were withdrawn in 1967 on closure of the Crompton & High Peak Railway.

Loco No. 68071 is preserved, as have many others of the class built for the War Department which never came into BR's hands.
