Total Number Built 70 - Total to BR 70.
Introduced 1930. Fowler Small Passenger and Mixed Freight Tank design, superheated with parallel boiler.
Developed from a design for a 0-6-2T authorised in 1928 but discarded because of weight distribution. Twenty were built with condensing apparatus, 15520-15539 (40021-40040), for working over Metropolitan widened lines to Moorgate, London.
They were not a particularly good design and after World War II most were fitted with a larger blastpipe and chimney and outside steampipes in an attempt to improve their performance.
Nine were modified with vacuum control for motor trains in 1935-39, Nos. 10, 20, 43, 56-61; No. 58 was replaced by 12 in March 1947
No. 21 had its gear removed in June 1944
Two more were altered in 1954 Nos. 17 and 45.
