LNER Class Gresley London & North Eastern Railway A8 4-6-2 Tank
Built 1931-36. Designed by Nigel Gresley.
Total Number Built 20 - Total to BR 20.
Introduced 1931. Gresley London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) rebuild of Raven North Eastern Railway (NER) Class D 4-4-4T of 1913.
Between 1933 and 1936 all of the Vincent Raven designed North Eastern Railway Class D 4-4-4T's (LNER Class H1) built between 1913 and 1921 were rebuilt to 4-6-2T's, following the earlier prototype conversion of H1 No. 2162.
These were the only 4-4-4 tanks inherited by the LNER at the Grouping.
All the rebuilt engines were superheated, but the domes, chimneys and smokeboxes varied amongst different locomotives. There were also three varieties of bunkers.

Rebuilt at the London & North Eastern Railway Darlington Works.
