LNER Class Gresley Great Northern Railway N2/4 0-6-2 Tank

Built 1928-??. Designed by Nigel Gresley.

Total Number Built 9 - Total to BR 9.

N2/4 Introduced 1928. Gresley GNR design. Heavier development of Class N2/2. Fitted with condensing apparatus and small chimney.

Class N2 was Gresley's development of Class N1 with larger boilers, superheaters and piston valves.

A Total of 107 Class N2 engines were built.

Number Series 69562-69567, 69594-69596.

Sub Classes:

N2/2 69490-69554, 69557-69561 - Total 70.
N2/3 69562-69567, 69594-69596 - Total 9.
N2/4 69555-69556, 69568-69593 - Total 28.

The small chimneys were to suit the Metropolitan loading gauge for working to Moorgate. Condensing apparatus was added/removed to/from locos which were transferred from/to the London area.

The first 60 locos were constructed for the GNR from 1922 with the remaining 47 appearing after the 1923 grouping as LNER engines and having left hand drive unlike the pre-grouping engines.

Although mainly remembered for working the Kings Cross surburban trains for almost 40 years, five of the class were allocated to Parkeston shed between 1952 and 1956 for working the Manningtree-Harwich passenger services.

The standard GNR tanks in later years were these Class N2 engines.

All of the class were withdrawn between 1959 and 1962.
