Built 1922. Designed by Nigel Gresley.

Total Number Built 40 - Total to BR 40.

J50/2. Introduced 1922. Gresley Great Northern Railway Class J23 design.

68900-19 rebuilt from smaller J51, built 1915-22.

68911/14/17/28 transferred to Departmental stock Nos. 10, 11, 12, 13 by BR.

The earlier GNR built engines had slightly more rounded cabs and otherwise differ slightly in minor detail.

Number Series 68900-68939.

Built at the Great Northern Railway Doncaster Works.

This Gresley Class was introduced in 1922 and was good enough for development by the LNER as one of their standard designs.

In 1922 ten J50s were built with a further sixty-two being built between 1924-1939. During this time a further thirty J51s built from 1913-19 (also GNR Class J23) were rebuilt to Class J50.

The class was widely scattered over the LNER, with a small group operating in Scotland.
