Built at Stratford Great Eastern Railway Works, order No. P75.

The tram engines were designed for use on the dock lines at Yarmouth and Ipswich, and along public roads on the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway.

After withdrawal of the passenger services on the Wisbech & Upwell line on the last day of 1927, two of these Tram Engines were enough to cope with the remaining freight traffic. However, Wisbech a sub shed of March, actually maintained an allocation of five of the small fleet until 1948. The were used latterly on the line from Yarmouth Vauxhall station that ran along a main road to the fish wharf and Ipswich Docks before being displaced by the new Drewry mechanical diesel shunters which made their debut on the tramway in 1952.

The last steam engine was supposed to have run on the tramway on 4th July 1952. However, engine 68222 was retained foe emergency purposes and was subsequently required on a number of occasions before finally departing the line in March 1953. It was withdrawn from service in January 1955.

To comply with Board of Trade regulations for locos running alongside roads they were fitted with cow-catchers, protective wheel skirtings, chimney spark arresters, warning bells and a speed governor with an 8 mph restriction.

Eleven locomotives of the twelve that made up the class survived to receive British Railway numbers.

The first loco withdrawn by the LNER was ??? on ??? 1942 from ??? shed.

The first loco withdrawn was ??? on ??? 1949 from ??? shed.
