SR/BR Bulleid Class WC 4-6-2 No. 34039 at Woodham Brothers Scrapyard 1966
BR/Southern Railway Bulleid BR Class West Country 4-6-2 Pacific No. 34039 'Boscastle' at Woodham Brothers scrapyard, Barry, Wales on 18th August 1966. Built at Brighton Works, it entered traffic on 16th September 1946 in full Southern malachite green livery. Rebuilt in January 1959, it was withdrawn from 71A Eastleigh shed in May 1965 after running some 745,000 miles in its 19 year working life and was subsequently stored at Eastleigh shed until sold for scrap to Woodham Bros of Barry in South Wales in September of that year. It is preserved at Great Central Railway. http://www.gcrailway.co.uk
The SR West Country and Battle of Britain classes, collectively known as Light Pacifics or informally as Spam Cans, were air-smoothed 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotives designed for the Southern Railway by its Chief Mechanical Engineer Oliver Bulleid. Incorporating a number of new developments in British steam locomotive technology, they were amongst the first British designs to use welding in the construction process, and to use steel fireboxes, which meant that components could be more easily constructed under wartime austerity and post-war economy. Although separately called 'West Country' and 'Battle of Britain' Classes, there were no design differences, the locomotives being identical, apart for their names.
A schoolboy trainspotter, wearing his school uniform of peaked school cap, shirt, tie, pullover, blazer, short trousers and knee socks, prepares to climb down from the locos cab. By 1966, school caps and shorts were no longer worn by the vast majority of boys, only public and grammar schools hanging on to them.Date Photo Taken
