A schoolboy trainspotter in his anorak and school uniform of peaked school cap, shirt, tie, pullover, blazer, short trousers and knee socks, poses for a photo beside WD/BR 0-6-0 Saddletank Class J94 No. 68043 and five others, at Darlington Shed 51A on Easter Sunday 18th April 1965.

The six locos, 68043, 68062, 68011, 68060 68037 and 68023 were stored awaiting purchase by the National Coal Board.

Although being slowly phased out, shorts and caps were items of school uniform common at this time.

There are some fantastic photographs in this album: I am enjoying them hugely. I can picture myself in them! But it is odd that the trainspotters are in school uniform on Easter Day! Although I would have been forced to wear similar clothing, it would've been a suit (with short trousers and long socks) or jacket and shorts rather than blazer and shorts. ---------------- Hi Steve, Many trainspotters in the 1950s and early 1960s wore their school uniforms most of the time, as mothers still resisted in buying them two sets of clothing due to financial reasons. You will find hundreds of photos of train spotters on the internet wearing their uniforms. I was on of the boys that wore my school uniform after school and at weekends (usually my second best blazer and shorts) as most of my train spotting friends did as well. In fact, on my first day at work, I work my old school blazer complete with badge as I had nothing else to wear. It wasn't until until I was 17 that I managed to purchase my first pair of jeans as most jeans were branded when I was younger e.g. Levis and were quite expensive.
