English Electric Type 3 D6769 stands in the yard at Thornaby Shed 51L on 21st July 1963 with a brake tender to the left of it. It was renumbered as Class 37/0 37069 under the TOPS scheme. It is currently in service with Direct Rail Services albeit stored in Pool XHSS. It was named Thornaby TMD on 29th August 1986, the name being removed in May 1992. BR Type 2 D5164, later renumbered as Class 25 25014. It was withdrawn on 20th July 1977 and cut up by BREL St Rollox, Glasgow, in September 1977.
A trainspotter, wearing a sheepskin jacket, slacks and carrying a BOAC bag, can be seen noting down the locos number.
Diesel brake tenders were introduced after it was discovered that the newly introduced diesels in the 1950s and 1960s had insufficient brake force when used on unfitted goods trains, so these vehicles were introduced to increase the braking available. A total of 122 vehicles were built and were numbered between B964000 and B964121. The vehicle would normally be placed in front of or just behind the diesel locomotive.
The tender took the form of a hollow box, low enough to avoid obscuring the driver's view when pushed. The body was carried on a pair of former carriage bogies, which provided the automatic brakes. The body was filled with scrap steel to raise the weight of the vehicle to 35½–37½ tons; consequently increasing the available brake force. Four lamp brackets were provided at each end to display locomotive headcode discs describing the class of train – when propelled, the tender obscured the front of the locomotive, and hence the headcode. Introduced around 1962, they were taken out of use in the 1980s when the practice of using unfitted trains was discontinued.Date Photo Taken
