BR/GWR Collett 2-8-2 Tank Class 7200 No. 7200 at Woodham Brothers Scrapyard 1966
On the left is BR/GWR Collett 2-8-2 tank Class 7200 No. 7200, built by Swindon Works in August 1934 at Woodham Brothers scrapyard, Barry, Wales on 18th August 1966. It was withdrawn from 87F Llanelly shed in July 1963 and sold to Woodham Brothers for scrap, and delivered to their yard in Barry Docks during November of that year. Other locos left to right are: Churchward 2-8-0 Tank 5224; Hawkesworth 4-6-0 Class 4900 Hall No. 4953 'Pitchford Hall'; Collett 4-6-2 Class 4073 Castle No. 5080 'Defiant'; Collett Class 5101 2-6-2 tank No. 5164; Churchward 2-0-0 Class 2800 No. 2874; Collett Class 5101 2-6-2 tank No. 5199; and two other unknown locos (first one possibly 5239).
The Great Western Railway 7200 Class is a class of 2-8-2T steam locomotive. These engines are the holders of several records: they were the first engines with a 2-8-2T wheel arrangement built in Britain, the only 2-8-2Ts to be built in Britain, and were the largest tank engines to run on the Great Western Railway. Introduced in 1934, they were a Collett development of Churchwood 4200 2-8-0T Class with extended bunker and additional trailing wheels.
Three engines are now preserved 7200, 7202 and 7229. 7200 was recovered from Barry in September 1981 and is currently under restoration at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre by the 7200 Trust. 7200 was one of only four locomotives to carry the coal scuttle type bunker which enabled it to have a greater water carrying capacity than the rest of the class.
The yard at Barry was the saviour of many engines and 7200 was recovered in 1981. Our example of Britain's largest type of tank locomotive was 'mothballed' for a number of years, due to the lack of manpower and finance. However work has now commenced in anger, and hopefully it will not be too long before the Buckinghamshire countryside will echo to its thunderous exhaust. The rolling chassis was restored at Swindon Works, and now has the distinction of being the last locomotive to leave the once eminent GWR works, closing 165 years of railway history. The rolling chassis is virtually complete with the inside motion and brake gear complete. Work is in progress to fit sidebars and crossheads, with installation of the connecting rods following shortly. New tanks have been installed, as has a virtually new bunker. The cab is also being repaired, hopefully being refitted shortly. The chimney and blower ring and many other parts have been made new.Date Photo Taken
