Popularly known to us young trainspotters as the "plant stream" it was one of the highlights of a Saturday spent on Doncaster station. The loco's always seemed to come out of the south end of the works (paint shop?), pass through the station and re-enter at the north end. Wonderful memory.

Bill Roberts said on the 11/02/2015: Comment
Thanks to the website "Shed Bash" there is evidence that the locomotives identified in this photo were all recorded in the Doncaster Plant on 15 July 1957 and none were recorded 2 months later. Therefore the date of the photo can be more accurately determined as summer 1957.

Bill Roberts said on the 21/09/2014: Comment
Cavalcades such as the one depicted were common at Doncaster as this was the
usual practice when moving locos between the plant and Doncaster locomotive depot, and vice versa. Photographs however are rare. I believe the photo is showing a \"plant stream\" as we called them, moving southward on the up main toward the loco shed, the K3 looking very much ex-works.

As another Steve said a couple of years back, he certainly looks somewhat sad. Personally, I think he looks smart but as he looks about 15/16 is probably not best pleased to still be wearing short trousers at his age. Of course if all his peers were similarly attired it wouldn't have been a problem.

Steve said on the 08/10/2015: Comment
No wonder he looked sad: judging by previous pictures he had been allowed to wear long trousers "off duty" for a year or two, so he probably found shorts quite demeaning. I did, when I changed schools at 13 having been in long trousers for two years..

Steve said on the 07/04/2015: Comment
Was he having a bad day?
Or did he dislike diesels?

One wonders why he's not facing the loco. Perhaps he's taking a quick note on the loco before moving on, or maybe he's inspecting a different loco...

This locomotive was seen during it times working the North Staffordshire railways passing though Froghall Oakamoor and Alton

Thanks for this picture. My brother David and myself had a footplate ride on the way back from Leeds to Sheffield on this locomotive.
This was arranged with the Driver by our late father Basil who was the guard on the train.
An unforgetable experience - Happy Days.

Hi

Not absolutely sure but I think this is Middlesbrough before the final section of the overall roof was demolished. Most of the roof was destroyed in an air raid. If it is M'bro the train is heading for Thornaby, then probably Eaglescliffe, Dinsdale and Darlington.

Some years ago following repairs the body of a German aircrew member was discovered within the station area. Sad, but at least the chap has now been laid to rest in a civilised and respectful manner.

Hello Howard,

I remember this day very well, Geoff almost missing the train to Newcastle. I think we visited Gateshead,Darlington shed Darlington works ,Robert Stevies works and Thornaby. I was almost fourteen when you took this pic, where has the time gone? Around about then I drifted away from the Carlisle spotting scene, the reason being I met a lad whose father like mine was a racecourse bookie. David lived in Leeds, which appealed to me, we spent many days at York, Doncaster, Nottingham etc. He also had an aunt who lived in north London. We stayed there at least three times, handy for london sheds. Anyway enough about my spotting passed. if you could let me know when in March you are coming to carlisle and we can arrange to meet. Look forward to hearing from you, Davy Matt.
