A bevy of properly dressed schoolboys. Brilliant photo

Definitely the Royal Grammar School. There was correspondence about the photo in the old boys' magazine about five years ago, and some individuals were even identifies.

Stephen Tyley said on the 03/02/2015: Comment
The boys are probably on a school trip, judging from their smart uniforms. The light grey blazers most likely the royal blue of the Newcastle Royal Grammar School. The Castle Keep stands like a medieval signal box above the diamond crossing at the east end of Central Station and still offers an excellent viewpoint for trainspotters, while safely segregating them from the hazards (?!) of platform ends. Many ticket inspectors were notoriously reluctant to allow young trainspotters inside the barriers, even with platform tickets.

Judging by the angle of his head, he's actually looking at a different loco not visible in the photo (it's somewhere to the left) on one of the other tracks.

I am the trainspotter on the bicycle with school blazer. A few of us used to gather at this location almost every day.

Great photographs of years gone by. I was never a train-spotter, but looking through these photos makes me wish I was!

However, I've noticed that most of these boys were wearing long trousers, including many younger ones. The above photo is an example: Although the lad on the bike may be 12 or 13, the other two look no older than nine or ten - and this was back in 1963. I wore short trousers until I left primary school in 1968, as did most other boys. However, a few managed to sneak into long trousers a year or two earlier! Anyway, thanks for all the photos and comments. I'd say it brings back memories for many a train-spotter of 50 or 60 years ago.

This is taken from Emanuel School driveway on Battersea Rise. A favourite haunt of many of the younger boys for many years. Don't think it still happens, though ...

Simon Bradley said on the 29/01/2015: Comment
That's correct. The exact location is near the top end of the drive into Emanuel School. I was at this school between 1976 and 1980, and the train-spotting hobby was still flourishing then. Boys who took spotting seriously were allowed to sign up for a special pass which allowed access to this end of the drive, from which it was possible, by dashing back and forth, to see the trains passing on both the Brighton and the South Western lines. The boys in the photo are quite close to this optimum location.

I could go on at great length about all this.. But to keep it brief: short trousers had of course been abolished for secondary schools by the 1970s, but the first and second forms still had to wear caps. We hated these, not least because the boys of the school next door used to try to snatch them as trophies. Mid-way through the summer term of the second year, it was announced without warning that caps were to be abolished immediately. If you had been at Clapham Junction that evening, you would have seen quite a few boys skimming their caps out onto the tracks, hoping to see them cut in half by a train or catching fire on the live rail. Another discarded cap was skewered on the railings in the photo, the remnants of its viscose lining still smouldering where it had been set on fire.

I think the location is just west of Clapham Junction, looking north towards Battersea Rise across the wide cutting there. Pub is still there.
