Sunday 15th February 2009 - Trial

ID 1378 Event : Binegar Quarry Trial

Venue : Binegar Quarry, 10:30

Hi everyone.
Firstly I must apologies for the site being down and of course a late report. The reason for that is a flight late Monday to the Costa del crime and ten days nice warm weather.
Back to the trial. We went and had a look around the quarry on Friday and found snow and ice covering the bottom to a fair depth which limited the choice quite a bit. The north side where the rocky sections are normally laid out the snow was too deep which made it impossible to see were the rocks and stones were laying and we passed on those. Back to the other side which had seen a little sun and we laid out six sections there. The wood which we normally use was very slippy so we decided to look elsewhere. The owner called in to see how things were going and told us we could use part of th top edge of the quarry which up until now had been out of bounds anyway we said we would be back in the morning and finish off. Saturday morning back at the quarry at nine with wire cutters and chainsaw we cut out what would be an entry point cleared quite a bit of old barbed wire and worked our way to the top bank putting in four more sections. We looked at the time nand decided we should go down the road to the showground at Shepton and have a look at all the classic bikes on display. What a feast! Something for every tast.
Sunday morning and I was met by the caterer at the gate plus the early birds and off we went. With it being the first event of the season as well as the entry fee for the trial we took membership subs. which made a lot of extra for the girls. At the start we had a bumper entry of ninety five and of course this led to some queing. The trial overal was low scoring and a lapse in concentration led to the old enemy five. From what I saw only section one got worse and on laps three and four one of the roots at the first turn kicked out the back wheel just enough to steel a dab. overall most people seemed to enjoy the day and the team look forward to seeing you at our next bash at Emborough ponds. Dave.

Sunday 15th March 2009 - Trial

ID 1379 Event : Emborough Ponds Trial

Venue : Emborough Ponds, 10:30

Hi everybody,
The team have been out today and set out ten sections in two groups at each end of the venue. We will fine tune them in the morning (Sat). We arrived back this morning with the bikes and rode all the sections. One of which as usual is a standard C15T and all seemed ok. The ground has dried out quite a bit from Friday and if we don't get any rain over night it should lead to a low scoring trial. A slack dab or a missed marker could cost you the trial!
Sunday morning dawned bright and cool and as I arrived at the venue the smell of grilled bacon was drifting around. That took care of breakfast! Ten thirty and eighty three riders left the start split into two groups. I didn't bring my bike along as I twisted my knee on Saturday and with enough observers I set off for the first group of sections to have a look how they were riding. One, two and three didn't cause too much trouble with the camber at the start of two stealing a good few dabs. Four was over stones round a tree and then split into two routes the A riders turned between two trees and this caused the loss of a mark or two. On to section five a real old Pre sixty five muddy water filled gully running for about thirty yards the B riders rode straight up and the A boys came out and around a couple of trees good to watch. I then made the walk to the other end of the venue and the other group of sections. Six started with a climb the B route went across the camber between two saplings turning left with a drop down to the ends. The A route went straight up between two large trees round to the left again dropping downn into a bomb hole right around a tree and out again to the end cards. By the third lap rock and roots began to show through and made it hard going for a lot of riders. This section took the most marks of the trial. The next four sections took a few marks with eight needing good throtle control and a keen eye on the markers, the rest didn't change much from start to finish. I am still suprised that some riders don't walk the whole section before riding it. anyway I like to think that most enjoyed their day out. Dave.

Sunday 19th April 2009 - Trial

ID 1380 Event : Easterton Sands Trial

Venue : Easterton Sands, Devizes, 10:30

Hello everybody, We are all set for Sunday. I have seen both farmers and had a walk around the venue and it's looking good. Arrived at the woods to set out the ten sections Saturday morning with the team and three bikes to test them before we left. This venue is basicaly split into two,The bottom is quite muddy in places and we could hardly stand as we marked out section three. To get to the top of the wood when wet can be hard work as we found out, three of the tracks were difficult for one rider on a modern bike so we weft the climbs out. We took the easy option and went along the slope to the right of the wood. section four and five both on cambers were quite slippy, Six and seven were both a drop down banks the a turn back to the top, with the odd rock, loose sand and tree roots thrown in. Section eight dropped down a sheep track then a steep climb to the top out on a steep camber. Sections nine and ten were set on cambers around trees and exposed roots at the very top of the wood.
Sunday morning and no overnight rain, with the smell of bacon cooking as we got ready for the start. In the bottom of the wood the sections had dried out a little too much but that was ok as some of the others would steal a few marks anyway. I had a wander around at about half way through the trial to see how it was riding and the feed back from the observers was most sections not taking too many marks with just the odd mistake leaving a rider out of the running. The A route riders lost most marks on section one, which when we marked it out seemed quite straight forward but by the second lap really took marks as the topsoil scrubbed off leaving exposed rocks on the turn out to the end cards. As the observer said later. I thought I would be bored but it turned out good fun. The B route riders found section seven the main worry with a drop down a track then a turn left back to the top and end cards. As the riders turned left if they didn't get th power on soon enough the roots stopped them. After that just before the turn right to the end cards another mass of roots were waiting to take a dab or two. See you later Dave.

Saturday 30th May 2009 - Trial

ID 1381 Event : Yatton Keynell Trial

Venue : Yatton Keynell, 14:00

Please note that this is a Saturday Trial and will precede the Club Scramble on the Sunday.
Saturday I was the last of the team to arrive at the venue at 9.20 and was pleased to see ten helpers with tools ready to start. We split into two groups and got on with the task of clearing ten subs in a forest of nettles and cow parsley with two good blade strimmers, hooks etc. We returned to the start at about 12.30 for refreshments and the testers then set off to see how all the sections rode tweaking them as they went around as needed. Returning to the start just in time for the off. At the start we had a very healthy entry of 64 riders and only just made the observer numbers up at the same time. The trial got into action and it soon became obvious that although it was bone dry four or five sections had very little grip in places. Section four was the main mark stealer with a down hill camber between trees then a sharp turn back to the top of the bank around a tree then back across another camber to the end cards. This took marks off all but two riders. Section five was another section that at first glance looked easy but a steep climb on long grass around a flag turn on a track down the bank around a blackthorn bush then a climb to the end cards caused quite a few problems and lost marks. The rest of the subs took a dab or two and looking at the results thats about right. A low scoring trial with only a couple of retirements. Thanks to everyone who made the trial enjoyable.

Saturday 1st August 2009 - Trial

ID 1382 Event : Temple Cloud Trial

Venue : Temple Cloud, 14.00

Please note that this trial is on Saturday start time 2pm.

This is in support of the club scramble on Sunday at the same venue.

I have been in contact with the farmer and everything is ok. As usual we will need observers so please come and help make this a successful weekend for the club.
Sorry for the delay in putting my report together. Computer down etc. Anyway back to the story. The railway track where most of the sections are was as usual overgrown to a point were we had to work most of the day with a blade strimmer and bill hooks before we could start to plan the sections. The banks and ditches to the side of the old track were quite dry which was a suprise, as the track had standing water all along it. By lunchtime Saturday all the work on the sections had been completed and we were ready to go.
At 2pm start we had a very healthy 46 riders ready to go and a good few were scramblers who were making a weekend of it. As the trial progrested the leafmould was cleaned off in a few sections and exposed rock hard clay which as water was brought down by the riders made parts of some sections very tricky taking lots of marks. The sections out on the banks around the scrambles track started out tricky as the shower at the start made finding grip difficult and a gentle throttle hand helped. As the sun come out the grass dried and things eased by the last lap. A good day was had by all.

Sunday 20th September 2009 - Trial

ID 1383 Event : Bannerdown Trial

Venue : Bannerdown, Bath, 10:30

Hi everybody, I have been to see the farmer and every thing is clear to go ahead.
A few words on for Sunday. We are all ready to go with the course set. I have to say I have not seen it this dry before. There should be plenty of grip.
Sunday morning arrived bright and sunny with Mr Chips ready to go by 9oclock
the team did a quick check to make sure nobody had been around and moved markers etc. By 10.15 we had enough observers and a quick look at the entry list showed an entry of 58 riders, which I thought was pretty good considering other events in our area. As usual I split the riders into two groups to try and ease the waiting, both for riders and observers. As I said the ground was very dry which soon got riders on the move. Sections one two and three only took the odd careless these being climbs up the banks and across loose cambers with drops to the ends. Four was much the same but the A route started with a climb turn right and then left to the top of the bank with a lot of loose vegitation and rubble which caught out one or two early riders on their first lap. Section five rode well ,again just the odd dab if you got off line. Six for the A route started with a steep climb over loose soil and took dabs if you didn't have enough speed. Sections seven and eight at the bottom of the venue are rocky gullies and if you got off line took marks. Section nine took a good few marks off a lot of riders. A start between two trees up a steep rise turn left across exposed roots then a right turn out to the end cards over more roots. Section ten crosses an old dry stone three times and changes with every lap as the stones are moved in and out of the line. This took marks off all but one rider on the A route and quite a few on the B route. I would like to think that everybody enjoyed their days sport. Dave.

Sunday 22nd November 2009 - Trial

ID 1385 Event : Lambs Lair Trial

Venue : Lambs Lair, 10:30

Hi everyone I have spoke to the landowner and everything is go for the weekend. With an all weather car park the trial will go ahead. We have just left the venue and tested all the sections in the rain altering as we saw fit knowing we have more rain forcast and how muddy it gets. The trial will go ahead. Should be fun!
Sunday morning and the rain was horizontal but blew over after an hour. It remained dry for the rest of the event, which was a great relief to everyone especially the observers as most were on exposed hillsides. I can't thank you all enough as you kept the trial on the move so we could get finished before it started to get dark. I had a walk around and a chat to most of the observers and watch as the going got harder and the sections cut up.Section one was a drop down a gully over a low bank then a step climb to the ends. This took odd marks off a few riders. On to two and the start which was a nasty little bank that needed to taken with enough speed on line and this is where the marks were lost. Three was across the top of the section then turn right down across cambered rocks then out to the ends. This took a good few marks from the experts but not many off the clubmen as they missed the camber and turned right to the ends. Next was a slip slide down to the bottom of the venue to start the climb back out. Four was a climb around and over fixed and loose rocks to section five. Now this is a great old pre sixty five section, about fifty yards long straight up the rocky gully full of rocks, stones and logs that have been washed down over the years. This always takes a few marks and saps the legs. Six had to be changed to make it easier to get into which was a turn around and between rocks then over two greasy mounds to the ends. Seven was the killer. A steep climb then a turn to the left then a right turn futher up before another turn right across smooth cambered rocks to the ends. Very few riders had a clean lap here on either route. Eight was another tough one a level run in a sharp climb right turn then left dropping into a deep gully with a sharp climb to the end cards with very little grip. Nine. Deep muddy ruts to cross leading to a gap between two rocks then a sharp left turn with a climb to a narrow ledge then a drop to the ends. This took lots of marks off most riders on both routes.Ten. Looking at this one you think it's nothing, just a few smooth limestone rocks sticking out of close cropped grass. Crossing this little outcrop after weeks of rain dragging red mud made it interesting. Sliding around, a prod here and there marks were dropped by all but one rider on the expert route and two on the clubman route.
I would like to thank everyone who made this event such a success. Observers. The team and Mr Chips.
